Yesterday the Under 7s travelled down to Bedwas for a round robin with the hosts and Blaenavon. On arrival we decided to mix a team of Newts with Bedwas as a Barbarians team to ensure all players had as much game time as possible. This meant 4 of the Newts squad joining forces with Bedwas, and a massive thank you to Finley Miles, Isabelle Davies, Mia Lancaster and Ellie-Louise Willets who all nominated themselves to form the joint team. On the other pitch the additional squad members formed an all newts team to face 2 Blaenavon Teams.
In what was very evenly fought matches some great tagging and attacking play from both teams resulted in 2 narrow victories for Blaenavon 6-5 and 7-6. It was very pleasing to see that both teams looked to complete and embrace the basics of the game. Some great individual performances with special mentions for Riley Morgan scoring his first try for the club, and to Ashton Fletcher who narrowly missed out on Player of the day after a faultless tagging display from Seren Fenell-Edwards who really came out of her shy shell to put on a great display. In the mixed team the Player of the day award was given to Finley Miles for another great display of leadership.. Well done both!!
Comments from the Bleanavon coaches following the game were also very positive and both sets agreeing some great rugby played and potential for the future. Again it didn’t go un-noticed the number of girls turning out for all our junior teams, quite fitting given mother’s day and international women’s day were all in the previous week.
